The Daily Pilot’s Barry Faulkner and Steve Virgen both tweeted today that redshirt freshman Kevin Mulloy has been dismissed from the team, due to “violation of team rules,” according to Coach Russell Turner. I doubt details of what exactly went down will be released, but it is extremely disappointing news for the once promising recruit.
On the basketball front, the team could have used his combination of athleticism and height. He showed a decent mid-range shot in practices and also was an above average rebounder and shot blocker. He departs UCI having sat out an entire season as a redshirt and only playing in two exhibition games. It’s frustrating to see both Maxime Chupin and now Mulloy sit on the sidelines for so long and yet never end up seeing the floor for the Anteaters. It’s akin to some investment that you take time to develop only to lose it without ever realizing its potential. It had also been reported by Mark Roberts that Mulloy would join the team again on the Alaska trip, which obviously did not happen. All the more frustrating to see what was believed to be a minor issue become a full-blown dismissal.
You want to see Mulloy recover and go on to have a successful college career, but it’s a bitter pill to swallow (see Eberhard, Joe and Efevberha, Mike). Faulkner points out that UCI is now down to only three Pat Douglass recruits (Wilder, Folker, Flowers). This also frees up another scholarship which conceivably will go towards landing a big man for next year.
Happy trails, Kevin.
