In the spirit of spending Thanksgiving with friends and family and not reading sports blogs, I’ll keep it short. Zotcubed is thankful for your readership.
Coach Turner and co. are up in Alaska dog mushing and participating in the 34th annual Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage, AK. Those hoping for UC Irvine’s first win of the season may have to wait another day as the Southern Miss Golden Eagles of Conference USA represent a tough match-up for the Anteaters.
Coming off back-to-back 20-win seasons, Southern Miss actually declined an opportunity to play in both the CIT and the CBI last year, with Coach Larry Eustachy citing the need to focus on academics instead of playing in lower level postseason tournaments. If the name Eustachy sounds familiar, it may be from his days coaching Idaho and Utah State against UCI in the old Big West, or maybe it’s from his more infamous activities at Iowa State.
The Golden Eagles are coming off of a 79-58 win over Colorado State, led by a ridiculous shooting day from junior guard LaShay Page, who had 30 points on 11-15 shooting, including eight three-pointers. UCI will really have to focus on making sure Page doesn’t get hot again, which is no small order for a team that always has trouble against high-scoring guards (see Lillard, Damian). Fifth-year senior Maurice Bolden represents another threat, and like UCI’s Mike Best, is 6’10 and 200 pounds. However, Southern Miss lists him as a guard. Finally, redshirt senior and former USC Trojan Angelo Johnson will be an interesting match-up at the point against UCI’s Aaron Wright. Hopefully the different experience levels won’t come back to haunt UCI too much. Go ’Eaters!
