Amidst the persistent rainfall and the familiar misty fog, UCI’s season came to an end in brutal double overtime fashion. Saint Mary’s 2-1 victory over UCI is just another reminder as to how hard it is to win in the NCAA Tournament. Although some may want to analyze the Anteater effort or how big of a letdown the loss was after earning a national seed, I believe the only appropriate remark at this point is a complimentary salute.

To improve on last year’s season even after losing 13 seniors is quite an accomplishment, as is the school single season record 16 wins. It will be hard to replace seniors such as Big West Co-Offensive Player of the Year Miguel Ibarra and (especially) four-year starting goalie Andrew Fontein, but I feel like Coach George Kuntz will once again find a way. When that time comes, hopefully the 2011 NCAA Tournament loss will serve as another dose of motivation and notch of experience that a future Anteater team will be able to redeem and capitalize on.
