Men’s basketball stays up in Norcal for what should be a friendlier match-up against San Jose State. The Spartans opened up their season by getting crushed against Cal Poly 79-50, which is actually worse than how UCI fared against No. 24 Cal. Coach George Nessman’s group was out-rebounded 47-26, and “didn’t do anything well,” according to Nessman.
Sophomore guard Keith Shamburger led the team with 13 points while senior forward Wil Carter chipped in with 12. Also of note: junior Joe Henson started at center, but former Anteater big man Matt Ballard got more minutes than Henson in the season opener. As a fifth-year senior, Ballard has one last chance to wreak havoc against his former school… which will counter with Mike Best, a post player who is even skinnier than Ballard was as a freshman. Good times.
