- Men’s basketball has announced that Alex Young, a point guard from Phoenix, Oregon has signed with UC Irvine for the 2012-13 season. Young was the 2011 Oregon 4A Player of the Year as a junior, leading his team to a state championship. If no one leaves the team next year, Young fills the 13th and final scholarship spot on next year’s team pretty early on. Not much information on Young thus far from usual suspects ESPN and the like, but he seems like another good get by Coach Turner. Here is a video interview from a camp that Young attended in Los Angeles. He cites his main reason for coming to UCI was a connection with Turner and Assistant Coach Ryan Badrtalei. Seems like a nice dude.
- In addition, it looks like someone presumably from UCI may be putting up highlight videos on Youtube after every couple of games. Good move. Here’s the video from the two exhibitions wins, which is hard to find due to poor tagging.
- Men’s soccer took down UC Riverside 2-0 last night in the Big West Tournament semi-final, and will now play UC Santa Barbara in the finals in what should be another epic match. This is UCI’s third appearance in the Big West Tournament Finals in four years, and all three times their opponent will be the Gauchos of UCSB. Luckily for Anteater fans, the game will be played at Anteater Stadium on Saturday.
- Excited to publish zotcubed’s first interview soon, right before the men’s basketball season kick-off against Cal. Stay tuned.
