I apologize for the lack of posts over the last couple of days–got caught up in the phenomenal World Series and my St. Louis Cardinals winning their 11th World Series in 11 years. According to the men’s basketball twitter hoops though: “What an amazing World Series game tonight…we can all learn how to COMPETE from these two teams!!” So I feel more than justified. On to some soccer senior nights…
Women’s soccer beat UC Riverside 5-0 on Sunday afternoon to end the season on a three game shut-out streak, out-scoring their opponents 11-0 to close out the regular season in grand fashion. They also locked up their second straight Big West title and home field advantage throughout the Big West Tournament. Senior Lexi Kopf had herself a (senior) day, following in Natalia Ledezma’s footsteps with a hat trick. Remarkably, this was UCI’s second hat trick in the span of a week after not having any for 15 years. Meanwhile, Ledezma added on to her spectacular season with another goal and two assists. The Lady Anteaters’ 13-3-2 (6-1-1 Big West) record should be good for an at-large bid no matter what happens now, but a “thrilled” and proud Scott Juniper believes that UCI should be ready for UC Davis in the first-round this time around.
Men’s soccer wasn’t so fortunate, blowing a late lead and falling to UCR 3-2. The Highlanders aren’t a bad team (9-5-2), but it appears that UCI had this one in the bag. Sitting at 13-5-1 (5-3-1 Big West) with one game left in the regular season, Barry Faulkner of the Daily Pilot points out that only UC Davis winning against both Cal State Fullerton and UC Riverside can deny UCI the title, so long as UCI beats Cal Poly in their regular season finale.
On another note… with October in its waning moments, men’s basketball games officially start very soon, so look for heavier men’s hoops coverage soon.
